I don't think it matters at all that some of these songs are totally manufactured and lame girly songs…Zebrahead have really put their own touch on things and just made them awesome…with some exceptions which are purposely made to be funny, like girlfriend and jenny from the block. Hell, they even made oops I did it again pretty decent. Maybe I'm taking the whole album seriously when it all really is just a joke…I don't know. Cuz some of the messages/themes in these songs are similar to zebrahead's…so they're just normal covers, despite being all girl band covers…you see, I was getting the impression that girl band songs = a joke, because Zebrahead are guys…but really it's just a theme…besides the exceptions.
It's a shame these aren't (completely) zebrahead's songs, because these are some of their most ambitious and diverse songs in some respects, eg, ali backing matty's vocals and featuring in choruses, matty and ali trading off line by line. It's nice to hear piano backing matty's vocals, and hearing synths. It's great to see they're not using the usual formula of ali verses and matty choruses, or matty everything except bridges. They've really changed things around for this album. Not saying I don't like the usual formula, it's just awesome when Zebrahead really mix the 2 singers around…cuz nearly every single band (because they have 1 singer) can't utilise this…and I think it can really grab people and make each song even more different from the other. I really hope Zebrahead carry on this way of thinking onto oncoming albums.
THE QUICK RUN DOWN:
Survivor - epic, awesome, mix the ali/matty and Zebrahead version of his world…rock. Would love to hear strings again in a future zh song
Girls just wanna have fun - really good cover, even if only 2mins
/underneath it all - will make a pretty good single, but I think other songs *may* have been better, such as sweet escape, but anyway…
Trouble - catchy, good, like it! May as well have been an original zh song
London bridge - very funky, quite different from the original, very good
Beautiful - nice, matty + piano, but don't worry, the rock comes in too, besides saying 'im beautiful'…Zebrahead may as well have written the lyrics too
Girlfriend - hey hey you you have already heard it…much poppier/catchier than the rest of the album
Sweet escape - really good, what can I say
Jenny from the block - funny
Rehab - good to hear ali backing up matty for a change, also a very good song
Spice up your life - average, just a Zebrahead version of the original
Oops I did it again - they kinda made it rock lol
Get the party started - better than spice up your life…a heavy version of the original
Mickey - fun, Zebrahead version of the original, good!
All I want for xmas - like the majority of the songs, a faster, rockier, zebra-fied version of the original. Fairly good though
WHO LET THE CATS OUT
Oh, and congats to the band for making such a good, diverse album. I know we all say this for every album, but I hope this increases their exposure a fair bit.
I look forward to hearing the next album, and again, hope some more of this...'experimentation'...or just diversity in general, particularly with matty
and ali, is seen next time around.
They've got 2 vocalists, so why not mix things up as much as possible...i remember reading an interview and matty said he writes his lyrics and ali writes
his...i don't know how true that is but I hope (if they dont already, because i have no idea how they write songs) really sit down together and make
something great between the 2, helping to write eachothers lyrics as well as their own
...sorry for the tangent. i hope you enjoy the album!!!!
Pps well done to zh/the label, or who/whatever prevented the album leaking on the internet before the release date!! (as far as I'm aware…at least I couldn't find it)
